As many of your will have read, the rains in Peru have caused problems accessing Machu Picchu due to landslides etc. Our contacts in Ollantaytambo tell us the railway and roads up to Machu Picchu remain shut due to damage, and several bridges have been ruined. 'Macchu Picchu has been cut off for a few days, and people are being airlifted out, running out of food etc...There has been a lot of rain for several nights, but it is quite pleasant during the day, sunny and even hot. Last night the main bridge in Ollantaytambo was washed away, and several houses near the roaring torrent of a river have been destroyed. The power was off for several hours overnight and today the telephones are on emergency only.' Any travellers on their way to Machu Picchu should discuss plans with their agents and guides. It is worth remembering there is plenty to see in Peru, even if its number one tourist destination remains inaccessible for some time. Further news - BBC
