" The idea is that users get a more genuine experience and give their money directly to the people who need it most," says co-founder Louise Norton. Although it currently has a strong leaning towards Peru, Louise's adopted home, the plan is to create a worldwide directory. Until then, her insider's tip is to get in touch with one of their listed guides to arrange an alternative hike through Peru's Sacred Valley, now that the Inca Trail is "sold out" until September. "Try one of the much quieter routes, such as Lares, Santa Teresa or Huchuy Qosqo, which take in Quechua communities, alpacas, occasional Inca ruins, and thermal springs," says Louise. "They allow much closer contact with the local people and often for a fraction of the price of going through an agency." |
