The recent eruptions of one of Iceland's volcanoes have been a reminder of how we humans are sometimes not in control. What this has also unfortunately revealed is the lack of contingency in the modern world's economy. Once again the UK tax payer has been identified as a possible rescue remedy for airlines in financial distress as a result of the volcanic ash. But surely this prompts a bigger question - why do we run companies so they are close to financial ruin anytime anything unexpected happens? Anyway, a priority on many people's minds is to deal with the current crisis. Around a third of my family have been affected by airline disruption, with for example my brother in law still stuck in Vegas after a conference. Anyway, I'm just hearing that the Navy will be stepping in to bring passengers back from Spain. No doubt this volcano will continue to require a creative response for some time. http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSTRE63E1TM20100416 |
