Bernadino Quispe
|

Description:
Bernadino is a local of Rumira Sondormayo, a community across the river from the better-known and larger Patakancha, about 20km uphill from Ollantaytambo. He is very active, receiving training and participating in meetings in various organisations but if he is free he can guide you to the pass at Ipsaycocha, where it is not hard to find your way downhill to Lares, or if he is busy he can find someone else to guide you. There is also native Queña forest in the mountains above his house which is interesting to walk to (or go on horse, which Bernadino can sometimes provide).
He has plans to receive tourists in specially-built traditional but comfortable accommodation on his family’s land but currently is happy to offer you space on a few cosy alpaca rugs with blankets to keep you warm. As well as paying something for this take some fruit and/or bread for the family. Like most people in this valley the family lives a subsistence lifestyle and it is amazing to see how they support themselves largely from the land.
