Inappropriate / Inaccurate? Marcelino Yupanki

Description:

Homestay project, one of several rooms in Patakancha with different families. Food is provided but if you cant give advance warning then it will be very basic, just the food the family eats. There is gas-powered hot shower and a flush toilet next to the room (not ensuite), which is very rustic but pleasant.

Marcelino is an interesting chap who speaks Spanish, though his native tongue is Quechua. His wife speaks less Spanish. They have one young son. This is a unique chance to have an insight into the lives of campesinos in the high Andes. The altitude is at least 4000m so take warm clothes and try to acclimatise at lower altitudes first if you have time. A bag of coca to chew and to offer to the people there can be bought in Ollantaytambo and is a great idea. You could also take fruit and bread to offer to the children (rather than sweets).

Price includes Breakfast, lunch, and dinner prepared by cooks trained to cook for tourists on the Inca trail (if advance warning given). 15 soles for each bed and 4 to 6 soles for meals.

Description

I went to the opening ceremony for these homestays. The community was enormously welcoming, and Marcelino and family were lovely. Communication will involve a lot of gesturing if you don't speak Spanish, and not all the community speak Spanish. But go, if you want to see how people live in the mountains in Peru, you will be in welcoming hands.

Best bits: Friendly smiley faces and curious kids in colourful clothes
Worst bits: Colder than I expected, take a jumper!
