Inappropriate / Inaccurate? Julius Issaya

Description:

Julius is a young, motivated, friendly guide based in Arusha. He speaks good English and has guided people from many different countries. In addition to his job, he's also studying part-time at a further education college.

Julius took me on a trip to the foothills of Meru, well off the beaten tourist trail, and I saw a beautiful waterfall beyond woodland and the homesteads where his family live and farm. He taught me some Swahili and we found PLENTY of cool fauna and flora.

I met Julius in August 2008 and we are still in regular email contact. He's since met a friend of mine who was visiting Tanzania plus her entire family!

In addition to this Leap Local site, Julius has a webpage at www.lawrencemoon.co.uk/julius

I'm also happy to provide you with a detailed, glowing reference for Julius if you want one! If so, contact me on lawrence.moon@kcl.ac.uk

Regarding activities and trips you could do with Julius, he writes;

"Lake Duluti - Visit this small crater on a leisurely morning or afternoon! This lovely Lake is flanked by a beautiful forest full of birds (the bird watching is cool!)

Ulong'a village- This is the Meru village where I was born and where my mother lives. On our farm land we grow coffee and banana trees and have three cows, several dogs and cats too! Come spend the day and learn how to prepare coffee the traditional way!

Meru water fall - Come and check out the vegetation. We will see fig trees, hemp bushes, aloe vera and pine trees, just to name a few. Don't miss seeing the N'nguu trees; A few with great significance in Meru traditional. Even you don't have an eye for recognizing vegetation, you will surely enjoy the beautiful falls!"

I recommend him highly!

Description

Julius took me to the area (Meru) where his family are subsistence farmers. I met many of his family members and we walked up into the forest where we saw colobus monkeys, many birds, and a beautiful waterfall. He showed me smallholdings growing coffee beans and he taught me to speak a little swahili and Meru. He is a kind, friendly guide. I recommend him thoroughly.

Best bits: Meeting his mother and friends near his home in the foothills of Mount Meru.
Worst bits: Leaving Julius
