Description
We hired an arriero for 5 days through Adventure Sota for soles 30 per day for the arriero and soles 30 per day for the horse. Total soles 300 - agreed.
We turn up on the day and are told the rate is now 40+50, but that the arriero can get home a day early after we release him and so they'll charge us just for 4 days, equals soles 360.
Not a big increase, but cheeky! After some dispute, we settled back to the original soles 300.
Then, after two days, our arriero Alex told us he had been told to go home, as Sota had only paid him for 3 days. Further, Sota were paying Alex just soles 15 per day. So Alex only got 45 soles of the 300 we'd paid - outrageous!
Alex was a great guy and agreed to stay with us for the 3rd day we needed him. We gave him a fat tip to take his wages up to a decent level.
A good reason why sometimes even "going local" is wrong. In this case a local agency was only too happy to mess around with a local arriero. Further, they dissembled with us constantly (other minor issues). Not worth the hassle! If you need an arriero in Ollantaytambo, go directly to Alex. He's recommended on here - search for Alex in Cajicata.
