Lyngen Alps Guides Bureau

Description:

The Lyngen Alps are a peninsular in north Norway with outstanding skiing. First made famous by Seth Morrison's illegal heliski video, the area is beginning to reach public conciousness - even the Guardian ran a feature on skiing there!

Such is the interest that there is a threat for commercialisation to what is currently a national park, with no motorised transport permitted. Access to the stunning ski fields are by ski tour only.

A lot of locals obviously welcome increased commercialisaiton; the area has an economy based on fishing nad manufacturing, so is not wealthy.

In response to this, and in order to try to keep the area's park status while proving it can be commercially viable, the local guides have created a guides bureau to encourage tourists to come ski touring safely in Lyngen.

Description

We spent 20 days ski touring independently in Lyngen and by talking to locals, in particualar Tor Petter at the Lyngen Guides Bureau, we became convinced of their concept to encourage responsible tourism to the area. Not least in terms of safety - they know the local conditions, which are quite tough: weather and avalanche risk.
Best bits: Great skiing
Worst bits: Appaling rain at times
