Description:
Petero Atamu is a family run "residencial" on Easter Island. It is just a short walk to Ahu Tahai, the moai (giant stone heads) that boast the best sunset view, on the island. It is close to restaurants and shopping. The rooms are basic, with private toilet and shower. There are glass sliding doors for airflow and the property is treed. There are two kitchens that guests can use and a lovely outdoor dining table.
You'll find on Easter Island you won't be spending much time at your hotel as there is so much to see.
Not all the family members at Petero Atamu speak English. If they arrange a guided tour - you can request a local guide who speaks your language.
There are mountain bikes available to rent at the residencial, or you can take a horse back tour of the island or go on a guided tour in an SUV or rent ATV or dirt bike.
Petero Atamu is popular with surfers because it is close to Pea Beach and the best surfing on the island. And it is popular with photographers who want to go to the moai every sunset to try and capture the perfect image.
You can mingle with the family members, like the young Canadian tourist in the attached photo, who is playing a game with the Pakarati family - or you can keep privately to yourself at Petero Atamu.

Description
I stayed at Petero Atamu and mountain biked around the 173-square-km island for 18 days, looking at the 886 Moai which cover the volcanic terrain. I explored the caves and swam at both Pea Beach and the exquisite Anakena beach. I enjoyed the local restaurants that are a short walk or 4$ cab ride from the residencial. I danced at the Banana Pub and socialized with the island's residents - I loved the unique culture and history on Rapa Nui - but I especially liked the locals.
Best bits: The friendliness and generosity at Petero Atamu was a highlight. There are $200 per night hotels on Easter Island. This is $15 a night for one person. You don't get the quality of towels and linen that you would at a $200 per night establishment. But it was amazing for $15.
Worst bits: The Easter Island sun is brutal and relentless. Even though I wasn't there at the hottest time of year - I slept with my glass sliding doors wide open. Amusingly I awoke scratching one morning and discovered I wasn't alone in my bed - a scruffy little street dog had joined me at some point in the night. I enjoyed the worst bits!

Description
This is not a typical review – it is an opportunity to identify Residencial Petero Atamu as a winner of Leap Local’s competition to reward good local guides and services. The best bits and worse bits are a snippet from our judges’ comments. More details about the competition are on our site.
Best bits: A wonderful example of getting such a personal, local experience, and in such a remote, little-known part of the world. Most people stay in expensive hotels here and won’t even realise there are alternatives.
Worst bits: Be good to see more reviews
