Surama Ecolodge

Description:

Activities available...Surama has 10 different packages, and offers a variety of nature and cultural tourism experiences to visitors. Some of the best birding and nature guides in the country come from the village, and their efforts and expertise in developing a network of trails and locating birds has made the village a premier location for seeing many highly-sought species such as the Harpy Eagle and Rufous-winged Ground-Cuckoo. Other visitor experiences include guided wildlife viewing and medicinal plant walks in the jungle, dugout canoe trips on the Burro Burro River, and treks up 750-high Surama Mountain. Two camps on the Burro Burro River allow guests to enjoy overnight nature excursions, and the river has excellent fishing for piranha, catfish and himarra at certain times of year. The village tour option includes visits to residents homes, the school and community development projects including The Women’s Craft Shop and Cassava Project, The Youth Carpentry & Woodworking Project, and The Junior Wildlife Club. The Makushi culture is well-preserved at Surama, and the cultural performances put on by school children are a cultural highlight for visitors.

How long it takes...Surama offers day trips to week long excursions. Typically visitors stay two or three days.

Who it's appropriate for...Birdwatchers, ecotourists, photographers, cultural tourists, families, scientists, researchers

Details of costs...For two persons sharing, prices range from about $US200 for a 2day/1night package to $750 for a 6day/5night package.
