Inappropriate / Inaccurate? Wistman Sanchez Huaman ( Wayra)

Description:

Wistman Sanchez Huaman Is a professional English-speaking mountain and jungle guide who has been working in tourism for over 13 years. His talents as a guide emerged when he began organizing trips for high school students all over Peru and South America, enthralling these teenagers with the wonders Cusco and its surroundings have to offer.
Wistman pursued this passion by working on the Inka trail and other popular treks throughout Peru and Bolivia. Wistman, Wayra or The King of the Mountains, as most of his friends call him, hiked the Inka trail, Salkantay, Choquequirao, Ausangate and other tours in the mountains of Peru and Bolivia for nine years while studying tourism at the college of Antonio Lorena. He led tours of the Inka museum, Inka Garcilaso de la Vega, and also with the Peruvian ministry of tourism. He graduated in 2000 with a degree in tourism and certified as an official guide. He proceeded to study Archaelogy at the university of San Antonio Abad del Cusco. After three years of studying, he travelled around South America and parts of Europe to gain more life experience. On this trip he garnered many ideas on how to create a successful tourist agency in his hometown of Cusco. Upon returning to Cusco with this knowledge, he founded Quechuas Expeditions travel agency. He chose this name because he comes from a family of native Quechua speakers. Quechuas are the native people of this part of South America. Many foreigners call the locals Inkas, but this is actually incorrect because the word Inka comes from Enqa which means king, chief or leader.

The people of Peru (and particularly in Cusco and the surrounding areas) still speak Quechua and in fact that is also the name of our people. As locals of this area, we are very proud of our heritage and passionate about sharing it with you. All of us at Quechuas Expeditions are thrilled to have you as our guest and invite you to learn about our culture. We have a professional staff of mountain, jungle and cultural guides - all licensed to guide the Inka trail, jungle tours, and cultural and archaelogical attractions in Peru and Bolivia. Our guides are dedicated professionals who lead our tours all year round, taking vacation only in February when the Inka trail is closed for maintenance and reforestation. All guides ar trained in first aid and rescue. We also have a professional staff of cooks who have done the inka trail for many years.

At Quechua Expeditions we strongly believe in looking after all our staff, in particular the Chaskis Quechuas (the porters) who we consider to be the unsung heroes of the Inka trail. By dealing directly with us and not through agencies, we can pay our staff fair wages, thereby stopping the exploitation which unfortunately was a reality for many of the local people here, especially the porters, who have been treated despicably by some agencies in the past. Be assured that we value and cherish our local people and resources. We take pride in looking after our team and pay well above average wages. A large percentage of our profits go towards funding local community-based projects either organized directly by ourselves.

Description

We did a 4-day Inka trail to Machu Picchu. We organized everything with Wistman some months in advance over email/phone and encountered no problems. The tour itself was amazing and we were in a small group which was great (compared to some big groups of 20 people we had much more freedom on deciding things on the way). The guide was very good, explained everything in detail and made the tour interesting. Cook and the porters also did a great job. Overall, value for money was excellent, I would definitely recommend.

Best bits: No problem organizing trip in advance over email; small group; great guide and porters
Worst bits: None, really
