Arturo Rios

Description:
Arturo Rios offers dune buggy and sandboarding tours on the massive dunes surrounding the oasis town of Huacachina.
Sandboarding is like snowboarding but on sand. You might be tempted to do this in a bikini but probably you shouldn't, even if you look good in one.
The dune buggy is your chairlift and Arturo is a safe driver. This is really important here because they aren't all safe drivers. Arturo is still fun and his current dune buggy has the powerful engine of a Toyota Hilux truck in it.

Kirsten Koza spent 2 hours or less with Arturo Rios.
DescriptionI spent an hour and a half screaming up and down the dunes. Up the dunes in the dune buggy, and down - Olympic skeleton style - lying on the sand board on my stomach facing downhill and going straight down the dune. You can actually sandboard standing on your board if you'd like. My board was set up for someone who uses their left leg as their front leg - I didn't think to ask to have this switched in advance.
Best bits: The adrenaline rush and the insane beauty of the landscape.
Worst bits: I should not have worn shorts. I thought I'd be smart and wear bicycle shorts that have the elastic around the leg - thinking I wouldn't get sand up my shorts. What I didn't think about is the sand heats up with the friction of your legs dragging over it - and you need your legs and feet to slow down your descent as the dunes are huge. I exfoliated my knee caps.
