Description:
What is Vicos all about... Vicos offers you a place to stay with the local population, in a separate bungalow but with continuous contact with your local hostfamily during the day. Activities include baking bread, working on the land and finding herbs and other ingredients for meals, but also short, medium and long hikes through the village's surroundings, accompanied by knowledgeable local guides. The project is managed and owned by th Cuyaqui Wayi tourism committee; in Huaraz they receive assistance from RESPONS. On their website (www.respons.org) you can also find more details on previous visits, prices, etc.
How long does it take... You can choose to go to Vicos for one day or several weeks. Recommended stays are 3 to 4 days.
Who it's appropriate for... Anyone who has a genuine interest in getting close to a local Quechua family. Vicos is probably the most authentic tourism experience you can get in Peru. Visitors have to be a bit flexible as to luxury and communication, but get an exciting intercultural experience in return.
Details of costs... Prices are flexible, on the RESPONS website you can find all details. For example, if you are a couple and visit Vicos for four days, you will pay 2 persons * 4 days * S/.110 = S/.880 Nuevos Soles (around $300 or €220), including almost everything.

Description
I started as a placement student at NGO The Mountain Institute in 2002, to work with the tourism committee of Vicos, and they have, quite literally changed my life. I was amazed by how I, as a 21-year old boy, was able to improve their quality of life through sustainable tourism. After my placement and thesis investigation, I kept working with Vicos and other communities for over three years. Leaving the Yachaqui Wayi Responsible Travel Center (and with that, the whole tourism chain from marketing to sales to logistics to the actual implementation) in their hands, I left for new horizons at the end of 2006. However, when I heard that the YW Center collpased beginning 2008, I decided to come back and continue the work with them, under a new formula. I have learned a whole lot of the Vicosinos and still have a great friendship with them. When several clients recommended Leap Local to me (for Vicos most of all), I decided to put Vicos on it.
Best bits: Learning about leading a happy life with such little resources... And their extreme hospitality!
Worst bits: It sometimes takes so long to explain certain things to them, due to a lack of education ;-)
