Description

I recently spent four days in Istanbul with my family, and we took two tours we had arranged with a private tour guide, Arif Yasa, who we found through his website http://mytouristanbul.com/home.html. We all had a fantastic time, and I really cannot recommend Arif highly enough. As well as being a licensed guide in Turkey he has worked and travelled worldwide, and we felt that this really showed in the level of his English, his friendliness and flexibility.

As we had never visited Istanbul before, on our first day we had quite a classic day tour, visiting the Hippodrome, Haghia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, the Basillica Cistern and the Grand Bazaar. Arif gave us exactly the right amout of historical infomation and was happy to answer any questions we came up with.

We all agreed however that the highlight of our time in Istanbul came the following day when we took the 'Walking Istanbul in 2 Continents' tour. This began with us walking the backstreets around the book bazaar, where Arif used the things we saw as starting points for a discussion of many different aspects of life in Turkey. (It was particularly amusing to watch the expressions on the faces of the men in our group when the subject of circumcision came up!) A short ferry ride then transported us to the Asian part of the city for the first time. We really felt that this tour gave us the opportunity to see a different side of Istanbul, visiting areas we would not have found using our guidebooks.

Finally, we appreciated Arif's recommendations for ways in which we could spend the rest of our time in the city, from turkish baths to restaurants and evening entertainment.

Best bits: Learning more about all aspects of life in Turkey
Worst bits: Nothing really!

Description

We spent two days touring Istanbul. One day in the old town visiting many of the sites. The second day a walking tour in the back streets. Arif was an amazing tour guide spending two full days with myself and 5 other friends. We used local transportation - ferry, tram, etc and walked. His knowledge of history and easy going manner made the trip to Istanbul memorable. I would highly recommend contacting Arif if you are traveling to Turkey.

Best bits: Great knowledge of history
Worst bits: The second day of walking was a bit long.
