Inappropriate / Inaccurate? Paulino Quillahuaman and Wilma Huaman
Description:
Paulino Quillahuaman and Wilma Huaman have set up a weaving workshop in Chincheros, on the plain above Peru’s Sacred Valley. A cooperative of several women use natural vegetable dyes and ancestral techniques to weave blankets, belts and scarves. They run free drop-in dyeing and weaving demonstrations for travellers on Chinchero market days (Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday). Or if you fancy learning how to produce these beautiful textiles yourself, they can teach you for $30 a day, including accommodation in their new purpose-built but traditional house, all food and materials. Paulino and Wilma are a wonderfully friendly couple (their friendliness will more than make up for their lack of English) and a visit is an insight into Andean Peru and its textile traditions.
