If you like to be outdoors in changing climates too, there are plenty of wonderful and colorful hikes for you to enjoy. Our favorites include Washington Park Arboretum and the Japanese Garden.

It also means you won’t be battling queues at some of the top attractions like Buckingham Fountain, Millennium Park, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the lakefront trail. You can also explore Chicago’s rich haunted history.

Koepsel’s farm market has been running since the 1940s, baking delicious homemade goodies you need to try! Why not grab some goodies and head to King Island Lighthouse to take in the panoramic views?

You will need the treats after all the steps it takes to get to the top. If you want to try some local ciders too, The Cookies Maze has plenty to offer. All the ciders are made from locally grown food, it’s well worth a visit.

There are family-friendly hikes, couples resorts, and plenty of beautiful fall foliage. If you live in Philadelphia, it’s perfect for a day trip! You are also only two hours away from New York here too. And if you are further away, it makes for a wonderful weekend break.

Make sure to explore the Ricketts Glen State Park when you visit. It is packed with wonderful hiking trails. These are full of scenic bridges and waterfalls, you might think you are walking through Rivendell when you see some of these waterfalls!

There are plenty of easy hiking trails too that are simple loops that the whole family can enjoy. There is also Bushkill Falls, a private hiking area. Here, there are eight waterfalls measuring 100 feet tall! These are beautiful and must be seen to be appreciated.

The Black Hills feature several beautiful lakes like Sylvan Lake, which is wonderful to visit during late September. Plus there is the annual Custer State Park Buffalo Roundup that’s worth a visit if you are around.

The roundup features cowboys and cowgirls that drive a herd of 1,200 buffalo to maintain a healthy and strong herd. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience that you don’t want to miss! If you do arrive a little later, though, there is the Deadwood Oktoberfest to enjoy.

You can soak up the history of the neighborhood, enjoying historical reenactors as they go about their day in the 18th-century town. There are lots of buildings you can explore too, that were hugely important in the Colonial South.

There are even ghost tours you can soak up in the evening! Next door in Williamsburg, there is the beautiful College of William and Mary, the second oldest university in the United States. The gardens are well worth a walk-through!

Woodstock is easily one of the prettiest villages in America. You have to visit Sleepy Hollow Farm when you go! The non-functioning farm is a wonderful place to photograph, walk around, and explore. Plus, the colors during fall here are to die for!

And if you want to do more than drive, there is plenty to do! Visit a dairy farm, brewery, or cheese shop, enjoy some covered bridges, or take a hoke. There are lots of holes, but Mount Tom and Mount Peg have the best views.

You can see the entire town from the top and the beautiful foliage that surrounds it. After hiking and burning lots of calories, head into Cloudland Farm or another farm to table for a lovely feast.

You can expect generous portions at many of the farm-to-table establishments in Woodstock. And if you love cheese, you need to visit Quechee Gorge Village or Sugarbush Farms. Here you can buy local cheese or sample some tasty cheese.

These stores are more than happy to let you sample the cheese to find the right one for you. There are a few boutiques, art galleries, and cafes too, so you can soak up more culture, shop, and stop for a coffee when you want.

Ouray offers you a wonderful fall vacation in September! The historic mining town has plenty of hikes and geothermal activities for you to enjoy. And just by looking at it, you can see how it’s earned its name of ‘the Switzerland of America.’

The main street is adorned with snow-capped mountains and forests. You can spend the day here, exploring the unique shops and getting to know the locals. Everyone here is super friendly, so don’t be surprised if you find people streaming up conversions with you!

You can then head down the Perimeter Trail, one of the most accessible ones in Ouray, which gives you a bird’s eye view of the town. You can also head to Box Canyon Park, just outside of Ouray. Here there is an impressive 85-food waterfall that you need to see.

There are lots of waterfalls and trails at Cascade Falls Park too, so be sure to check them out. If you like a tougher hike, Cascade Falls Park is sure to have an option for you! And after a long day of hiking, why not relax and unwind at Orvis Hot Springs?

Here, clothing is optional, but fun and relaxation are mandatory! The hot spring spa is filled with natural water that is never lithium-treated. It’s a wonderful spot, and if you go at dusk, it can be super romantic.

If you want a trip filled with relaxation, drive along the Million Dollar Highway. It stretches from Ouray to Silverton and is one of the most beautiful roads in the country.

As you drive along in the fall, you will see plenty of colors from the leaves and maybe the odd squirrel or two! Take your time on the drive and soak up the beautiful views.

Here there are wonderful viewpoints where you can stop and take in the scenery, plenty of hikes, and even wine tasting! Whatever you want from your fall vacation, we bet you can find it here! Make sure you experience Hood River’s Fruit Loop if you visit during the harvest.

This is a 35-mile drive that takes you from the Columbia River into Hood River and back along produces stands, local farms, breweries, wineries, and so much more. It’s a wonderful way for you to see the sights, enjoy local baked goods, and get wonderful photographs.

Maps are provided so you can follow the loop with ease. Plus, there are lots of opportunities for you to get out and stretch your legs if you want to. Make sure you take advantage of pear and apple picking while you are here too.

The Kiyokawa Orchards are the best ones to visit. You can also enjoy corn mazes and pumpkin patches at Packer Farms. These are fun for the whole family. There are so many cider mills and wineries to visit, you might find it hard to pick one.

Let us recommend The Gorge White House. It is packed full of unique cider flavors and plenty of charm. It’s a wonderful stop to break the day up and sample some tasty cider. For those that enjoy wine, Cathedral Ridge Winery is a wonderful place to visit.

It has a wonderful view of the canyon, and you can see the colors of the trees blend in the fall, creating a wonderful ombre effect. It’s like something out of a movie!

Portland is the perfect place for a mini getaway! Here you will see the beautiful green trees transition to yellow and orange, surrounded by haunted houses and wonderful pumpkin patches.

It’s a wonderful place to get ready for the spooky season! Make sure to visit the Portland Aerial Tram to get the best views of autumn foliage in the city. The trams are a good way to move around the city and also soak up some of the views.

It’s worth taking one up to Oregon Health and Sciences University (OHSU). It’s only four minutes, and the views are sensational. Portland is a quirky place to visit, and it’s a trip you are sure to remember. There are plenty of unique and scary haunted houses for you to visit.

There are fight nights too that you can attend throughout September and October. Some of these will have age restrictions on them, so be sure to check before you arrive. The last thing you want is to be disappointed.

There are also wonderful pumpkin patches for you to check out. Here you can pick your own pumpkins and take part in other classic fall activities like a corn maze, hay maze, and hay rides.

Plus, there are lots of gift shops where you can grab some fall-themed decorations and souvenirs for your trip.

For the adventure lovers in the room, we have Redwood National Park for you. There is so much to do here in the great outdoors, from ancestral lands to glorious hikes.

Redwood is home to the land of the Tolowa, Chilula, and Yurok tribes, with plenty of their rich history still preserved in the park. In the fall, the region sees a huge shift. The forest changes color from its typical green to yellow, oranges, and reds.

It is a wonderful sight of natural beauty!  The weather is pretty good too. It will still be pleasant and warm but without the rain. You might have the odd wet day, but nothing like you would in December.

It tends to be quieter in Redwood during the fall than in summer, so if you hate crowds, now is the time to go. As it’s quieter too, you will have more time to stop and enjoy the views. If you want to make the most of your time here, we recommend camping.

However, if you want some more comfort, or camping isn’t for you, check out the Requa Inn or Hotel Arcata. These are all Indigenous-owned and are wonderful places to stay in Redwood. Spend some time on your trip hiking and exploring the trees.

The Boy Scout Tree Trail and Lady Bird Johnson Grove Trail are some of the best. They are wonderful to walk through, although you can drive through Avenue of the Gods. This is a must on your trip!

Not only is it accessible, but it allows you to see the Joshua trees in all their glory. There are a few restaurants to visit too while you are in Redwood. They can get busy, even during the fall, so we recommend making reservations where you can.

Santa Fe comes to life in the fall. The artsy city is packed full of architecture that looks beautiful in the fall sun with the changing colors of the leaves. Plus, the weather is cool enough that you only need a light jacket, but still get plenty of sunshine.

It is the definition of perfect weather! If you enjoy the outdoors, then Santa Fe is the place for you! Their National Forest is an hour away from downtown and is perfect for camping, star gazing, hiking, and everything else you want to do!

Plus, the foliage during the fall is fantastic here. The trees transform into a beautiful golden-yellow color, making the whole forest shimmer! And if you want to stay indoors, there are plenty of museums and art galleries to check out.

There are also lots of restaurants for you to visit. Make sure to try hatch chili (served as salsa). This specialty is served from August to September, so make sure you visit in the early fall if you want to try it.

There are also lots of restaurants serving classic New Mexican cuisine you should try. There are lots of choices, so you are sure to find somewhere that suits everyone’s tastes.

If breathtaking waterfalls are your thing, then head to Oregon’s scenic byways! Here, 30 million acres of forest are spread out, ready and waiting to be explored by you.

You will probably have seen photos of Multnomah Falls during the fall, but it’s a sight you need to see in person! The entire state of Oregon is filled with fantastic colors in September and October.

There are so many must-sees in the scenic byways, it’s unlikely you will hit them all in one trip. You might find yourself returning year after year to see as much as possible.

For your first trip, we recommend the McKenzie Pass-Santiam Pass Scenic Byway. Here you can enjoy the McKenzie River National Recreation Trail where you can fish, boat, bike, and hike surrounded by beautiful views.

The green forest is broken up by red and orange hues that complement the turquoise water beautifully.

It’s also worth heading to Silver Falls State Park where you can enjoy red vine maples and plenty of waterfalls. Plenty of fall colors will border the waterfalls too, making them an even more beautiful sight to behold.

There is also Willamette Valley nearby, the wine region of Oregon. Here you can tour vineyards, attend fall harvests, pumpkin patches, and lots of other fall-related fun activities. You aren’t too far from Cascade Lakes Scenic Byway either (which we mentioned earlier).

Don’t forget to hike either Mt Hood or Mt Bachelor to enjoy views of lakes and other fantastic mountains. If you don’t fancy hiking, simply enjoy the views of these gorgeous mountains. Who doesn’t love looking up at beautiful hills and mountains covered in fall colors?

There is also the Deschutes River trail which is filled with red vine maple trees. The color of these in fall is sensational! You can follow the trail to heavily forested areas like Crater Lake, Gold Hill, and Umpqua National Forest. There is gorgeous foliage here for you to enjoy.

Another must-see is Toketee Falls, where the basalt column waterfall and trail are filled with crimson and amber leaves. This is most appreciated on a crisp and colorful fall day. Make sure to add Oregon to your fall bucket list!

Make sure you check out the Scenic Overlook, where you can see for miles. It’s one of the best ways to soak up the views. You can also head to Ober Gatlinburg, where you can ride the Gatlinburg Aerial Tramway for a bird’s eye view of the city.

If you enjoy cable cars, make time to do this! There is also a sky life for those that don’t enjoy cable cars. It will take you to the top of Crockett Mountain, where you can enjoy a breathtaking view of Gatlinburg and all it has to offer!

By visiting in the fall you will find smaller crowds and milder weather. It should be less humid too, making your time there far more enjoyable. As it’s quieter, it’s a better time to check out the main attractions like Dollywood.

Depending on when in October you visit, you could attend Gatlinburg’s Taste of Autumn, Oktoberfest, or Gatlinburg’s Chili Cook-Off. You can check the dates of these before you book your trip to see what you could attend.

You can also spend time relaxing in your cabin. A trip to Gatlinburg doesn’t need to be action-packed, it’s a wonderful place to relax and soak up the changing colors of fall. Plus, you can slip into a hot tub with some bubbly and check out the foliage!

October is the best time to visit Dallas. It isn’t too hot, the tourists have dispersed, and the Texas State Fair is underway. Why wouldn’t you want to check this out? If you are in Dallas for one day, make sure you soak up the spirit of the state and enjoy the attractions.

But if you have more time to spend here, check out the Arboretum. There are wonderful trees to see, food to enjoy in the veggie garden, and live performances throughout Oktoberfest.

There are also lots of romantic activities too if you are looking for a fall break. You can go pumpkin picking, and grab a pumpkin pie and two forks. It’s a wonderful way to spend an afternoon and is sure to get you in the fall spirit!

There are plenty of romantic rooms you can stay in too. From cabins to treehouses and city apartments, there is something for everyone and every budget!

Early October is the perfect time to pay a visit to Yellowstone National Park! The gorgeous area of Wyoming should be on everyone’s bucket list.

The fall foliage adds plenty of color and depth while contrasting the backdrop of Gallatin Mountain Range and Mount Washburn beautifully. By going in October, you will miss the bustling summer crowds and the first snow of winter.

There couldn’t be a better time to go and check out the national park! As it is quieter, you are sure to see more of the fantastic wildlife too. It is also the mating season for elks and moose. Expect to hear the whistling roar of the male elk as he lets out his mating call.

And if you want to get closer, there are plenty of guided tours that will allow you to witness this. But if mating calls aren’t your thing, there is so much more natural beauty to enjoy. There are hot springs, fumaroles, and mud pots you can witness and even get in!

Sure, Old Faithful is the most famous geyser, but there are lots of other smaller geysers that are just as mesmerizing. Pink Cone Geyser and Riverside Geyser are wonderful alternative hot springs and geysers that you should check out.

It’s also worth visiting the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone. There are epic views to be seen, but you will need to hike the South or North Rim trails. These aren’t for the faint-hearted, so be sure to map your journey before you leave.

If you have the time, we recommend hiking both. There are some lookout points that you should pause at on both trails, including Lookout Point, Inspiration Point, Point Sublime Hike, and Artist Point.

It’s worth noting that some services might be limited in October, so be sure to stock up before you go or when you arrive. There are plenty of food and drink stores outside of the park, so you can get your favorite goodies before heading in!

You are spoilt for choice when it comes to accommodation. There is Mohonk Mountain House, a Victorian house that is surrounded by fall colors. It’s also worth looking at a farm for some apple picking and a walk through the fields of beautiful colors.

If you are all adults on the trip, make sure to head to some apple orchards with cider houses. You can pick apples, sample cider, and even enjoy some wood-fired pizza! This sounds like the perfect afternoon for us!

Plus, you get to see the Smoky Mountains and the Blue Ridge Mountains as you drive along the road, what more could you want? You can access the parkway in Asheville and stop along the way for some hikes. There is so much to see here, you will want to stop all the time!

There are lots of pull outs you can park along to, where you can stop to take photographs or marvel at the view. You can also visit the Great Smoky Mountains National Park to see more vivid fall colors in action. There is also the Urban Trail in downtown Asheville.

This 1.7-mile walking trail covers 30 landmarks showing you the history and architecture of downtown Asheville. It’s a wonderful way to spend an afternoon. There are also plenty of U-Pick farms where you can go apple picking.

North Carolina is one of the biggest producers of apples, so you can be sure to find apple picking, apple festivals, and more across the town and at local farms.

Pumpkin picking and corn mazes will also be up and running during October for you to take advantage of. Whether you love walking, exploring new towns, or enjoying the bright fall colors, there is something for everyone in Asheville!

You have so many options of where to go too! We recommend starting in San Antonio, the Alamo City. Next, head up to Austin, the Live Music Capital of the World. Be sure to catch some live music while you are here, you are sure to see a few new and emerging artists.

There are plenty of unique places along the way you can visit too that will take your fall vacation to the next level. From wineries and lush landscapes to small towns and natural sights, there is so much to see and do on your trip!

Fredericksburg is a small German town that has some of the best food you will ever taste! Wimberley is great for shopping, and Jacob’s Well and New Braunfels are excellent spots for a swim.

We also recommend checking out San Marcos and Canyon Lake too if you have the time! There is so much to see and do, you will be glad to have spent your time on vacation in the Texas Hill Country!

Albuquerque is a wonderful place to visit, especially in October.  They host the world-famous Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta every October, the world’s largest hot air balloon festival.

People travel across the world to see thousands of hot air balloons take off into flight. The balloons come in traditional shapes, as well as wild ones. You can expect to see everything from cows to penguins launch into the sky!

There are sunrise hot air balloon flights and an evening balloon glow that you shouldn’t miss! There is also the opportunity to fly in a hot air balloon if you fancy it. And if you aren’t into hot air balloons, there is so much else to do!

The largest city in New Mexico is home to lots of museums like the Albuquerque Museum and the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center.

Here you can learn about the history of the town, see exhibitions from local artists, the Spanish Duke of Albuquerque, and the history of New Mexico’s 19 pueblos. If you want to learn more about the city or expand your knowledge and find new artists, this is the place to be!

You can also visit some of the filming locations in town. Why not see where they filmed Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul? You can have your picture taken in some of the famous locations, and feel like you are there!

If you enjoy collegiate football and NBA basketball, Oklahoma City is the place to go in the fall! You can enjoy beautiful and scenic drives near where you can enjoy fall foliage before venturing into the city for some wonderful food and drink.

There are loads of options here, so you are sure to find something that suits your tastes! Basketball season usually begins in late October. Make sure you grab some tickets beforehand and head down to Oklahoma City to see one of their Thunder games!

You can then head over to Bricktown after the game and enjoy a night out. You can expect it to be buzzing, especially if Oklahoma’s team wins! If football is more your thing, drive to Norman.

The suburb in Oklahoma City is home to the University of Oklahoma and its football team, the Sooner’s. Their team is consistently ranked one of the best in the country, so it’s well worth checking out one of their games!

Again, book your tickets before your trip so you aren’t disappointed when you arrive. There are plenty of wonderful food options too. And authentic Oklahoma cuisine was designed to be eaten during the fall.

Why not enjoy some chicken fried steak and mashed potatoes? It is sure to warm your soul and fill you up. Don’t forget to try a slice of pecan pie while you are there too! There are twelve dishes on the official Oklahoma State Meal, why not see if you can eat them all?

It’s one for professional climbers, so don’t attempt it if you are uncertain. Afterward, you can visit Pikes Peak to take in the beautiful mountain views. And once you are ready to eat, you have plenty of choices!

Most of the restaurants will offer huge portions that will keep you full at lunch or dinner. For those looking to see something quirky, head to the Royal Gorge Bridge and walk over one of the longest suspended bridges.

It’s not for the faint-hearted, especially if you don’t like heights, but the views are worth it! After you cross the bridge, you can take a trolley car. here you will see more of the view and you won’t need to walk back across the bridge!

There is also a trail ride through the Rockies you can enjoy, located next to the Arkansas River. Regardless of your interests, you are sure to find something for you in Colorado Springs.

The fall has some of the best colors and perfect temperatures, making you want to return time after time!

If you want to avoid the crowds, make sure you visit Yosemite in the fall. Yosemite National Park is open for all of October and some of November too.

There might be some early snow in areas like Tioga road, causing it to close early, so be sure to check the weather forecast before you leave. You might need to adjust your route slightly.

While Yosemite has a lot of evergreen trees, you will still see some beautiful Pacific dogwoods, black oaks, and maples, all showing off their wonderful fall colors! The average temperature in October is in the mid-50s, making it a wonderful temperature for hiking.

The temperature can drop through the night, so be sure to bring layers if you are camping. There will be some more water back in the park too, returning life to Yosemite’s waterfalls.

These are wonderful sights to see, make sure you allow some time to walk around these tall waterfalls. If you don’t want to camp there are plenty of hotels nearby, or even in the park itself! There are plenty of options to suit every budget too.

If hotels aren’t your thing, there are cabins too! There is also a small grocery store at the park, although we recommend bringing some food with you in case they don’t have your favorites.

No matter when you visit Yosemite, you can expect a stunning landscape that will stay with you forever.

The Catskill Mountains are a wonderful part of upstate New York. covered in rivers and forests, it is a wonderful place to unwind and relax from your hectic life. This is a fall destination you need to visit!

And as it’s just two hours north of New York City, it’s the perfect place for a weekend getaway or day trip. There are lots to do here that will allow you to make the most of your time here in nature. There are plenty of hike trails to enjoy and mountains across the Catskills.

Or you can take a scenic drive. Here you will pass villages and small towns surrounded by wonderful fall colors and foliage. It can feel like something out of a movie.

The drive from New York up to the Catskills is one of the best road trips in the USA, we strongly recommend driving here if you can!

Once you arrive, there are lots of activities like zip lining at Hunter Mountain or mountain biking. If you love action and adventure, this is the place to be! We also recommend the train ride on the Catskill Mountain heritage railroad.

The scenic route starts at Westbrook Station and works across the mountains and rivers. The journey only takes 1 hour and 15 minutes, each of them spent showing you beautiful fall foliage. The colors and scenery are sure to blow your mind!

These rides happen between September to October on weekends and holidays. The ticket price is quite affordable for adults and children, but be sure to double-check the cost before you arrive as it could change.

There is also an open-top car on the train that is a wonderful way to see and enjoy the vistas. For peak fall foliage, head to the Catskills in mid-October. You can also visit closer to the end of October, but the colors might not be as vibrant!

Boston is the perfect place for a weekend getaway, blending New England’s charm with a busy coastal city. It tends to be quieter in the fall, after graduations, and the weather drops off too. The humid summer has left, giving you cooler weather and quieter streets.

Plus, Boston is transformed into a golden-red color in October, it’s a sight you don’t want to miss! You don’t need to travel around Boston to see these fall colors either. There are plenty of beautiful parks in the city, like Boston Common and Boston Public Gardens.

It’s the perfect weather to cycle between wine tastings or sit outside sipping some wine. Everything is still open in Livermore in November too, so you can make the most of your trip without melting your chair!

And it tends to be a lot quieter in November too, so you won’t need to battle crowds to get into the wineries or find a dinner reservation. As it is quieter too, you will find that winemakers and their staff have more time to dedicate to you.

You can expect plenty of chats about wine, its history, and its development too. You will leave your fall vacation a wine connoisseur! And the fall colors at Livermore are beautiful!

The leaves across the vineyards will be changing from soft yellows to deep red, it is a sight you won’t want to miss. And as the sun starts to wane, the whole place is covered in a golden-yellow hue. It is the textbook definition of golden hour here!

There is nothing quite like sitting outside a Livermore vineyard with a California Chardonnay in your hand watching the sun slip away and enjoying the peace. It is a little slice of heaven right here on Earth!

Death Valley is one of the largest parks in the US, and is well worth a visit in November! Not only are there badlands, mountainous terrains, and sand dunes, but there is also the lowest elevation point in the US, Badwater Basin.

All of this must be seen to truly be appreciated! Most of the park is in the Mojave Desert, home to the Joshua Tree National Park. The park is four hours south of Death Valley but is also worth a visit if you have the time and are interested in trees.

The scenery is transformed into a wonderful yellow hue, and everywhere looks as though it has been kissed by the sun. In the heart of the Rocky Mountains, Aspen transforms into a sea of colors during the fall.

Not only is it a wonderful place for outdoor lovers, but there are lots of scenic vistas in the mountain town where you can pause to see the wonderful fall colors. Our favorite scenic route is Independence Pass.

This is the highest pass in continental North America, sitting 12,000 feet above the ground. Here you will see some of the best fall foliage and enjoy a wonderful walking route. Maroon Bells is another popular location in Aspen.

The pair of jagged mountains in the Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness are some of the most photographed in North America. November is the best time to see them in their fall glory, and it only takes a short shuttle bus from Aspen to Maroon Bells to see them!

There is also the Silver Queen Gondola to Aspen Mountain that you can take. This shows you sweeping views of the mountains and stunning fall colors. And if you want to explore further, Denver is only 160 miles away!

Why not extend your trip and see what Denver has to offer too? It can be hard to visit Death Valley in the summer, with temperatures topping 120 degrees Fahrenheit. But by visiting in the fall, the temperature cools down, allowing you to hike there too!

There are lots of hikes here, allowing you to choose gentle ones, or tough and challenging hikes, depending on your preference. There are quick half-mile hikes, challenging 24-mile hikes, and everything in between!

Be sure to bring plenty of water and snacks before setting off, no matter how long your hike is. If you don’t enjoy hiking, there are lots of other things you can do too. You can drive through the park, stop, and take in the viewpoints.

The range of landscapes here is astounding, you are sure to see something here that you have never seen before! Plus, you can stay in the park too! There is resort-style lodging and camping for you to take advantage of, there really is something for everyone here!
