If you haven’t yet had the good fortune to try frozen custard, then you, my friend, have not lived. It’s pretty vital you get out and try some now. Like right now.

The Best Places For Frozen Custard In America 10 Places You Need To Visit!

For those of you who have had the privilege of sampling this cold and creamy dessert, you’ll know just how life-changing it is.

Frozen custard tastes pretty similar to ice cream, except that it’s a whole lot thicker and smoother. And nicer, in my opinion.

In fact, I adore frozen custard so much that my hunt for the very best of the best is never-ending. Every time I visit a new state, I ensure that I find myself a local frozen-custard store and get sampling.

Over time, I’ve had the chance to try frozen custard pretty much anywhere and everywhere across the US, and I’ve found some real beauties throughout the years.

So, I thought it would only be fair to share my findings. And that’s why in this list you’ll find the very best spots across the country for frozen custard. Excited? You should be. Let’s get started!

1. Ted Drewes Frozen Custard, Saint Louis, Missouri

6726 Chippewa St, St. Louis, MO 63109

Found on the renowned Route 66, it’s worth coming to Ted Drewes just for the drive alone! But once you find yourself here, you’ll be able to think of little else but the amazing selection of frozen custard on offer.

Those who struggle with making decisions might find picking a flavor a little difficult here as they have one of the largest flavor selections across the whole of the US.

The frozen custard itself is amazing. It’s so thick that it’s nicknamed the sword of King Arthur since removing the spoon from the stuff is so difficult. And if you thought picking a flavor was hard, it won’t get any easier when it comes to choosing your toppings.

If variety is the spice of life, then Ted Drewes is one hot chili pepper!

2. Hank’s Frozen Custard, Meadville, Pennsylvania

13940 Conneaut Lake Rd, Conneaut Lake, PA 16316

Having been in business since the early 1950s, you’re in good hands at Hank’s Frozen Custard. I’ve been here several times and each time is better than the last.

If quality custard that tastes absolutely divine is what you’re looking for, then search no more. Hank’s has the goods you’re after.

What I love about Hank’s is that there’s always a frozen custard of the day that is always a show-stopper. Regardless of your favorite flavor, you can ensure that they’ll have it. Stop by and try it for yourself!

Top tip – try the cherry frozen custard. It’s out of this world.

3. Leon’s Frozen Custard Drive-In, Milwaukee, Wisconsin

3131 S 27th St, Milwaukee, WI 53215

Leon’s Frozen Custard Drive-In has been a local favorite for some time now, and this gem should not be underestimated. The quality of the custard here is honestly mind-blowing. You won’t ever taste anything like it again.

I’d advise making your way to Leon’s as early as possible if you want your choice of their flavor selection since they regularly run out. They’re just too busy to keep up with demand it would seem.

This family-owned business offers many delicious flavors such as Strawberry and Butter Pecan amongst many others. It is their special flavor of the day though that wins it for me.

Sometimes it’s Maple Walnut and other days it will be Cinnamon. Regardless of which day you drop on, either of these flavors are a must-try.

4. Kill Devil’s Frozen Custard And Beach Fries, Inc., Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina

1002 S Croatan Hwy, Kill Devil Hills, NC 27948

Don’t let the name put you off, there’s nothing evil about the frozen custard served here. Though it is devilishly delicious. If you’re hoping for gorgeous frozen custard with equally stunning views, then this is the destination for you.

You can settle into one of their cute little picnic tables as you devour some of the thickest, most velvety frozen custard you’ve ever had the privilege of trying.

The flavors are great too with tons of variety. The coffee flavor is great and they have loads of fruity options too such as lime, mango, or blueberry. If you find yourself in the area, then this underappreciated spot is a must-visit.

5. Maple Shade Custard Stand, Maple Shade, New Jersey

340 W Main St, Maple Shade Township, NJ 08052

Have you ever eaten something so good you’ve actually questioned whether it was real? If not, you’ve never sat and snacked on the frozen custard served at Maple Shade Custard Stand. Honesty, it is out of this world.

Many people flock to the location to try their large variety of different flavors. From chocolate to strawberry they really have it all.

But the custard is not all the adorable stand has to offer. It probably has the best ambience of any frozen custard store I’ve ever been to. You could effortlessly and easily sit there for hours.

6. Greg’s Frozen Custard, Mundelein, Illinois

1490 S Lake St, Mundelein, IL 60060

Whether your frozen-custard cravings strike first thing in the morning or just before bed, Greg’s has got you covered. Open 11-11, 12 hours a day, there’s never an inconvenient time for custard!

However, if you are desperate to try a particularly popular flavor, I’d recommend getting there towards the beginning of the day since it really doesn’t take all that long for them to run out.

This does mean, though, that you can always guarantee you are sampling some of the freshest frozen custard on the market.

7. Massey’s Frozen Custard, Carlisle, Pennsylvania

600 W High St, Carlisle, PA 17013

Having been in business since the early 1940s, Massey’s has had plenty of time to perfect their delicious recipe. You can be sure that you’ll be in good hands here. And in terms of flavors, you’ll be absolutely spoilt for choice.

From individuals to big parties, Massey’s is sure to have you covered. The secure lock-up for cars and bikes also means that you can enjoy your frozen custard fix completely worry-free. The only way it should ever be consumed.

8. Bobby’s Frozen Custard Inc., Maryville, Illinois

2525 N Center St, Maryville, IL 62062

Personalised frozen custard? Yes, please. At Bobby’s Frozen Custard Inc, they are firm believers that no one should be deprived of the joy that frozen custard brings.

And that is why you can pick the right custard to fit your own personal dietary needs. Pretty cool, right?

They have low-carb and low-fat options available for those trying to stick to a healthier diet. But don’t worry, if like me, you’re happy to stuff your face with the full-fat stuff, they have the Original Custard too.

There are tons of different flavors to choose from and they are all made hourly so you can assure that you are getting the very freshest option possible.

9. Sydney’s Frozen Custard, Grand Marais, Minnesota

14 South Broadway, Grand Marais, MN 55604

Many locals adore Sydney’s Frozen Custard, and it’s really not hard to see why. The most difficult decision you’ll have while here is picking your favorite flavor. They have a pretty extensive list of their thick and velvety frozen custards.

This custard is honestly so moreish too. Luckily, it’s pretty reasonably priced so if you’ve got room for another portion, you can always go back and try out another one of their amazing offerings.

10. DeNucci’s Soft Serve, Fernandina Beach, Florida

2210 Sadler Rd, Fernandina Beach, FL 32034

If you find yourself anywhere close to Fernandina Beach then it would be criminal not to stop at this delicious soft serve for the perfect hot-day snack.

There are so many wonderful options to choose from in terms of flavors from fruity options such as berries to nutty flavors like almond – there is something for everyone.

Speaking of something for everyone, it’s also worth noting that they’ll color-code their frozen custards too.

If you notice a blue shading, it means that the option is sugar-free which is great. It makes these delicious treats more inclusive for those with dietary restrictions.

Thick, velvety, creamy, and delicious, you definitely don’t want to pass off the opportunity to snack at DeNucci’s Soft Serve.

Final Thoughts

Move out of the way ice cream, there’s a new thicker, creamier, and tastier frozen treat on the block and that is frozen custard.

As far as treats go, this is definitely one of the most indulgent and you won’t find anything more refreshing on a nice hot day.

Each and every one of the places mentioned above have been tried and tested by myself, and so I can absolutely assure you that it’ll be of impeccable quality and standard.

No matter which of these establishments you decide to visit, you’ll be in very safe hands and experience only the best customer service.

You’ll have so many different delicious flavors to choose from that it might seem a little overwhelming just trying to pick one. But don’t panic, there’s no rule that says you can’t go up for seconds!

Plus, I would really recommend trying more than just one of these establishments. Visit as many as you can! Why not even curate your very own frozen-custard road trip?

Travel across the country and taste as many delicious samples as possible. Isn’t that the dream? Sounds like heaven to me!
